Much of our work is carried out by three subcommittees: Employee Activities, RiceFest, and Staff Development. All Rice staff members are welcome to join any of the SAC’s three subcommittees. Subcommittees meet once a month, with the exception of the RiceFest subcommittee which meets monthly from the January to April leading up to RiceFest. For more information about a specific committee, contact one of the co-chairs directly.

Employee Activities is responsible for coordinating employee events such as the popular Ice Cream Social held every summer,  the regularly scheduled Lunch Bunch, and the Rice Spirit Day around Homecoming. The Lunch Bunch events provide an affordable lunch at a residential college servery and feature discussions by members of the Rice community on their personal experiences within the residential college system.  The Rice Spirit Day Contest is a door (or office space) decorating contest from Rice Departments and individual offices.  This is a relatively new activity that occurs annually around Homecoming.  It’s great having various departments and offices participating.

Staff Development looks for ways to increase personal development and growth opportunities for all staff members. The Brown Bag events have included demonstrations by the university chefs, informative presentations by Rice departments, instruction on social media, organic gardening, community involvement, as well as organ recitals at the Shepherd School of Music.

RiceFest plans and organizes the annual RiceFest event during the benefits open enrollment period in mid to late April. The event highlights faculty and staff benefits as well as services available through campus departments and programs.
